Besides being a delight for your taste buds, this powerful little berry can be a great addition to your skincare as well. So while making that super-delicious smoothie, set a couple of strawberries aside and whip up a strawberry face mask.

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C (containing more of this vitamin than oranges, believe it or not), and offer many skin-loving benefits – talk about it a bit later. But first, let's make some yummy face masks with strawberries for smooth and soft skin and a brighter complexion.

Strawberry Face Mask With Lemon

In combination with lemon, strawberries will remove excess sebum from your skin's surface and clean the pores. Lemon juice is a natural astringent that helps with acne. In addition, AHAs in strawberries will gently exfoliate your skin, making this mask perfect for oily skin.

You'll need:

  • 3 strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 to 2 drops tea tree oil (optional)

Preparation & application:

  1. Wash the strawberries and remove any stems.
  2. Mash the strawberries using a fork, blender, or stick mixer, and strain the juice.
  3. Mix the juice from strawberries with the lemon juice.
  4. If you have flaring acne, you can add one or two drops of tea tree oil.
  5. Soak a cotton pad in the mixture, then dab gently on cleansed face. Make sure to avoid the area around your eyes.
  6. Leave the mask on for about 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  7. Continue with your toner and moisturizer.

This mask will help you get rid of all the impurities, and the result will be a radiant and brighter complexion. Note: Even if you're not allergic to strawberries, it's recommended that you first apply the mask to the inside of the forearm and observe how your skin reacts.

Strawberry Face Mask With Honey

strawberries, honey, and yogurt

This face mask is a god-send for dry and mature skin. The collagen-boosting vitamin C in strawberries combined with the moisturizing powers of honey will smooth any fine lines and wrinkles and give you an even skin tone and texture.

You'll need:

  • 5 strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon unpasteurized honey
  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt

Preparation & application:

  1. Wash the strawberries and remove any stems.
  2. Mash the strawberries using a fork or a stick mixer to get a smooth consistency.
  3. After you've mashed the strawberries, add the honey and yogurt.
  4. Honey will adequately bind the ingredients and make the mixture more compact and easier to apply. If your mask is too thin, it will slip from your face. So if needed, add more honey until you get a solid consistency.
  5. Apply the mask to cleansed face, and avoid the area around your eyes.
  6. Leave it on for about 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and continue with your moisturizer.

You might experience a slight burning sensation. If it becomes too uncomfortable, rinse off the mask before 15 minutes have passed. If you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge. However, don't keep it for longer than a couple of days.

Strawberry Face Mask With Avocado

This nourishing and hydrating face mask is an excellent choice for any skin type – dry, oily, combination, sensitive. It will refresh tired skin and dull complexion and give you that youthful, dewy look.

You'll need:

  • 5 strawberries
  • ½ ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon unpasteurized honey

Preparation & application:

  1. Wash the strawberries and remove any stems.
  2. Mash the strawberries and avocado using a fork or a stick mixer to get a smooth consistency.
  3. Add honey to the mixture to bind the ingredients and make the mask easier to apply.
  4. Apply the mask to cleansed face and leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water, and follow up with your moisturizer.

Again, if at any point you experience a burning or tingling sensation that's too uncomfortable, rinse the mask off. It's also important to note not to apply the mask if you previously used a chemical peel or face scrub.

Exfoliating Strawberry Face Mask With Oats

strawberries and colloidal oats

In addition to nourishing face masks, you can use strawberries for making a gentle exfoliating face pack. You can make this exfoliating mask using strawberries and ground oats. It will gently remove dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin and hydrate it at the same time.

You'll need:

  • 5 strawberries
  • 3 tablespoons colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats)
  • 1 teaspoon jojoba oil

Preparation & application:

  1. First off, you need to make colloidal oats. Use rolled oats without added sugars or flavors. Blend them using a blender or a coffee grinder until you get a fine powder.
  2. Then prepare your strawberries. Wash them, remove any stems, and mash them using a fork.
  3. Add the mashed strawberries into the ground oats and mix well.
  4. Add the jojoba oil into the mix and give it a nice stir to blend all the ingredients together.
  5. Cleanse your face and apply the mixture to damp skin. Be gentle and use your fingers.
  6. Leave it on for about 15 minutes.
  7. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water while gently massaging the ingredients into your skin using light circular motions.
  8. Follow up with a moisturizer.

The slightly rough texture of strawberries combined with ground oats will remove any excess dirt, oil, and dead skin cells from your skin. To lock all the moisture and nutrients from the mask in, it's best to apply your moisturizer to damp skin.

Benefits of Strawberry Face Mask

Besides being loaded with vitamin C, strawberries contain other skin-loving ingredients, such as AHAs (or alpha-hydroxy acids), folate, salicylic acid, and ellagic acid. Therefore, strawberries address a number of skin issues and have the following skin benefits:

#1: Anti-Aging

Jam-packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants, strawberries can boost collagen production in the skin, resulting in skin that is more tout, elastic, and smooth [source]. In addition, a 2017 study suggests that strawberry-based cosmetic products have protective properties, counteracting the UVA-induced skin damage, and therefore, preventing DNA damage and photoaging.

#2: Help With Acne

Strawberries are rich in salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a mild exfoliant that works wonders deep inside the pores as well, removing excess dirt and sebum and preventing acne and blemishes [source].

#3: Skin Lightening

Besides salicylic acid, strawberries are also a rich natural source of ellagic acid [source]. Ellagic acid has numerous benefits for the skin. First of all, it acts as a powerful antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the skin. Secondly, ellagic acid inhibits the activity of certain enzymes in the skin responsible for melanin production. Therefore, it's a perfect ingredient for fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and skin brightening.

#4: Exfoliating and Bleaching

Besides salicylic and ellagic acid, strawberries also contain AHAs, mostly citric and malic acid [source]. All of these acids have mild exfoliating properties, which makes strawberries perfect for both oily and dry skin. In addition to being exfoliating, some of these acids, especially malic acid, have bleaching properties as well. Therefore, it's often used for teeth whitening.

#5: Protecting

Strawberries are chock-full of folates or folic acid [source]. It's a form of vitamin B necessary for normal cell function and regeneration. Folic acid is, therefore, needed for both mental and physical health as well as the health of your skin.

Takeaway...

Strawberries contain all the ingredients your skin needs for a healthy look and feel. Hence, they can be found in many cosmetic products. Although buying a ready-made product is much faster and less messy, if you're in the mood, you can make your own DIY skincare using different ingredients from nature, like strawberries.

With homemade masks, you always know what you're dealing with – you are aware of the quality of the ingredients and the complete composition of each preparation. In addition, you can dictate the ratio of ingredients yourself, and thus adjust the mask to your current skin needs. So, use some of your free time during weekends and give your skin what it craves – natural care.
